Fab Melo ruled ineligle….SU dreams go up in flames.
Sensitivity demands that I apologize beforehand to those whose tragedies, dysfunctional lives & super-cluster-fucks go far deeper than my present anguish, wretchedness & woe. I realize that this is about basketball, not eco-cide, mass starvation, or even the KONY2012 Video; I’m fully aware that this about SYRACUSE BASKETBALL, not the Rapture or indigenous injustice…..all this is is a dagger to the spleen.
The just-announced academic ineligibility of Fab Melo for the NCAA Tournament is a brain-melting lightning bolt to SU fans everywhere. This is a team that was ranked #1 or #2 in the national polls all season, a team that earned a No. 1 Seed in the Big Dance by virtue of an astounding 32-2 record….and a team anchored by the intimidating 7-foot ‘Brazilian Bully’, Fabricio de Melo. To highlight the value of his presence, consider this – one of their losses was to Notre Dame in mid-season, when Melo was sitting out a 3 game suspension with this same unnamed “academic issue”. Notre Dame, typically, had this big Irish galoot at center who Fab would’ve eaten alive. The white-bread lunk scored 28 & owned the paint. The point being that this is now no longer the same high-octane turbo-team it was all season, a team going into the Tournament with high hopes for a deep run.
The immediate fallout, of course, is the Tournament. They should be able to beat a 16th seed in the 1st game Thursday, but will probably run into a rough & tumble Kansas St. team from the Big 12 – I game I was looking forward to until an hour ago – it pains me to say that I see them losing that game now without Melo…..you have to win 6 straight against increasingly better teams, and I was confident in them winning 3 or 4 (& yes, maybe 5 or 6)……”Throw your dreams out in the rain” Tom Waits said….it’s a hard thing to take, I’m gettin’ a little choked-up here as the gorge rises.
The whole thing has a stench about it. There’s a common practice of withholding information about injuries before Selection Sunday, when the seedings are announced….if the committee knew that Fab would be ineligible, I doubt very much that they would have awarded a No.1 seed to the Orange. This begs the question – how long did the Athletic Department & the Basketball Organization know?…how long did Coach Boeheim know?…the team?….have they all been showing face & talking the line?…or is this some intra-institutional bullshit that brought the sudden hammer down?
There’s a lotta goddamn questions I want answered goddamn soon!!……in the meantime, I writhe in torment & agony, here in HOOPS HADES.
